MT4 Handles Trade Requests When Automated Trading Permissions Are Disabled

An Expert Advisor can remain attached to a chart, calculate signals and display alerts even when it is prohibited from sending trades. That distinction makes automated trading permissions more consequential than a simple on-off switch. A strategy may appear operational while its intended position changes never reach the broker.

In mt4 trading, permissions can be controlled through the terminal’s AutoTrading button, Expert Advisor settings and account restrictions. Understanding which layer blocks execution helps explain five risks that arise when an algorithm encounters a trading prohibition.

A Running Strategy Can Generate Signals Without Opening Positions

Disabling automated trading generally prevents Expert Advisors from executing trade operations; it does not necessarily stop their calculations. An indicator value, entry arrow or journal message may therefore continue updating while OrderSend requests are rejected.

A chart showing a valid entry signal is not evidence that a CFD was purchased. Inspect the Experts and Journal logs for errors, then compare actual open orders with the strategy’s expected exposure. Error code 4109, when reported, indicates that trading is not allowed in the relevant context.

Disabled Permissions Can Prevent Automated Exits as Well as Entries

An existing CFD does not disappear when AutoTrading is switched off. Broker-held stop-loss and take-profit instructions generally remain active, but an Expert Advisor cannot rely on submitting a fresh market exit or changing a stop while its trading permission is disabled.

This becomes particularly serious for strategies whose exits depend on calculated conditions rather than protective orders already accepted by the broker. Review which safeguards reside on the server and which require the algorithm to send a new instruction.

A Missed Exit Can Change the Entire Trade’s Economics

Imagine a hypothetical long CFD on a European paper manufacturer, with 250 shares purchased at €28.40. Its algorithm is designed to close the position if the price reaches €27.90, limiting the intended price loss to €125, excluding costs.

After entry, automated trading is disabled during a settings change. The market reaches €27.90, and the Expert Advisor detects the exit condition, but its attempted close is blocked. No broker-held stop-loss was installed. By the time manual intervention occurs, the executable bid is €26.80. Closing 250 shares realizes a €400 loss, €275 more than the planned exit. The relevant failure was not an unexpected signal; it was the absence of permission to act on it.

Restoring Permissions Can Trigger Stale Trading Intentions

Re-enabling automated trading does not inherently replay every rejected request. Nevertheless, poorly designed Expert Advisors may retain internal flags or evaluate an old setup as if it were still actionable. A position intended for an earlier price regime could be opened after conditions have changed.

A useful safeguard is to require a fresh signal timestamp, confirm current spreads and recalculate exposure before any order is sent following reactivation. Simply restoring the button’s enabled state should not authorize an outdated decision.

Different Permission Layers Can Complicate Troubleshooting

The global AutoTrading setting, an individual Expert Advisor’s Allow live trading option and broker-side restrictions can each prevent execution. Changing one setting may leave another prohibition intact. Some terminal configurations also disable automated trading after an account or profile change, depending on selected security options.

For mt4 trading systems, a blocked request should be diagnosed by identifying the controlling permission rather than repeatedly resubmitting it. Before opening a CFD, verify global and strategy-level authorization, confirm that the account permits algorithmic orders, and test whether an existing position can still be protected if automated execution is switched off.
